LAVA FIELD GARDEN
In late 2012, O2 Landscapes was asked to design a garden amongst a rocky outcrop in Mount Eden for an elderly couple enthusiastic about gardening. The stone grey house (designed by Stevens Lawson Architects) called for a vibrant green garden full of colour and seasonal events that would complement the style of the house, yet manage to grow on a site that was previously stone, with a moderate amount of soil. Rather than importing stone, all the basalt that was hand shaped to create the paths, stairs and walls around the building was site stone, dug out from the excavation and put to new purpose.
